
George Washington was born in 1732. George was elected President in 1789. Washington won a lasting place in American history as the "Father of our Country. " For almost 20 years, he lead his country much like a father cares for a growing child.
There were three important ways Washington helped shape the beginning of the United States. First, he commanded the Continental Army that won American Independence from Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. Second,Washington served as president of the convention that wrote the United States Constitution.Third, he was elected the very first President of the United States.
At the age of twenty years old, George Washington had no experience of training as a soldier. But Lawrence's war stories had fascinated him in military affairs. More than 250 years ago, America was part of the British Empire. The thirteen American colonies stretched down the Atlantic seacoast from Maine to Georgia.
In 1749 Washington became an offical surveyor for Culpeper County,Virginia. Washington died in 1799 at the age of 67.
