School Improvement
One of the major ways that we guide our work in schools is through the development of a School Improvement Plan.  In the past, this process has focused on targeting State test scores and then trying to isolate activities or strategies that could be used to improve upon those scores.  In many cases, this plan became very cumbersome and could not always target what was most import or have the greatest impact on student achievement.

While we will always look at test scores and testing data as a measure of our performance and success, this will no longer be the sole focus of our school improvement efforts.  The Gresham Barlow School District has changed their focus around school improvement so that our plans will not only align with the Oregon State Educational Compact, but will also align and be based on best educational practices.  Specifically, we have made a shift from being reactionary (i.e. last years 8th graders scored 68% on the Math test what do we do now?) to strategic (i.e. if we focus on improving the way we engage students, they will be more involved in class, will learn more, and will ultimately perform better on state assessments). This has been accomplished through the focused work around our six District Initiatives, professional development during Wednesday Late Start activities, and through a major focus on Teaching and Learning.

During the 2013-14 school year, Gordon Russell will be focusing efforts around Instructional Practices (student engagement and assessment), Data Teams (using collaborative teams to improve student performance by using data), and building Family and Community Partnerships. We feel that these are needed areas of focus and include every key attribute of successful schools.  To be more straight forward, we are evaluating how and what we are teaching, how we are grading the work that students complete, and how we then communicate that information to students, parents, and the community. By ensuring that all staff are being consistent, are implementing programs and strategies with fidelity, and being reflective about their practice, the staff at GRMS will be able to provide the best possible experience for your student(s).

School Improvement Plan 2013-2014
This year, our formalized School Improvement Plan has taken on a new format and focus.  The plan contains Leading Indicators for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades as identified by the state of Oregon Education Compact.  The leading indicators are given below along with targets for performance. In addition, you will see a description of for the District Initiatives we have chosen to focus on, and our work plans for completing the work we have outlined.  We will be posting these documents for your reference over the next few weeks.
